Department of Tourism

Tourism in Bhutan started in 1974, operated as a fully Government owned enterprise. In 1991 tourism operation was privatised to encourage the Bhutanese private sector to undertake increasing responsibility to build the business sector. Tourism Authority of Bhutan (TAB) under the administrative control of the Ministry of Trade and Industry was formed as a regulatory body. TAB was renamed the Department of Tourism in 1999 with the same regulatory function.
The Department now has more role and scope as a facilitating, promotional and developmental agency other than its overall regulatory functions.
