Department of Trade

The Department is comprised of two Divisions - Internal Trade Division and Foreign Trade Division. The Internal Trade Division looks after the retail and wholesale trade within the country in matters regarding policy, licensing dealership etc. This Division also deals with matters pertaining to consumer protection, awareness and rights. The other works of this Division include the regulation and supply of POL products and maintenance of fuel reserves. The newly established Import Licensing Section under this Division will deal primararily with the issuance of import licences.

The Foreign Trade Division deals with activities relating to bilateral and multilateral trade. This Division deals with Bhutan's bilateral trade agreements with other countries and also its membership in multilateral forums such as SAARC, SAPTA and SAFTA, and Bhutan's accession into the WTO. This Division also analyses statistics on exports and imports and frames policies to support the growth of foreign trade. The Export Promotion Centre under this Division helps exporters with the distribution of information and organisation of market research missions, trade missions and trade fairs.
